SMBC Singapore Open drawcard Jordan Spieth had his first taste of the award-winning Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club in the tournament pro-am on Wednesday and found his rhythm early.
The world number one was literally first off the tee at 7.30am and played the opening hole impressively in front of a gaggle of photographers.
A perfect drive to the centre of the fairway was followed by an approach to 12 foot. His birdie putt came up a few inches short, a scenario that was repeated a couple of times during his round.
While it was business as usual for Spieth after a few days resting and recuperating, there was a notable change in personnel around him with his regular caddy Michael Greller not making the trip to Singapore.
Greller, a former teacher who has formed a winning partnership with Spieth over the past couple of years, hurt an ankle during the Hero Honda Challenge in the Bahamas last December and the injury flared up again at last week’s Abu Dhabi Championship.
In his absence, the caddy duties will be taken over by Spieth’s agent Jay Danzi.
He was busily studying the undulating greens on the Serapong Course, double checking the yardage book and consulting regularly with Spieth during the pro-am on Wednesday.
