Titleholder Sergio Garcia will chase a double-double at the SMBC Singapore Open next January after he successfully defended his Andalucia Valderrama Masters crown on Monday.
Coming off a great Ryder Cup, when he became Europe’s all-time points scorer in the biennial team event, local hero Garcia won by four shots in the weather-shortened 54-hole tournament.
Garcia continued his love affair with Real Club Valderrama by shooting 12 under par, including a final round 69 that spread over two days.
With a third Valderrama Masters title in the bag, Garcia will be looking for his second straight victory in the SMBC Singapore Open at Sentosa Golf Club from January 17 to 20, 2019.
The swashbuckling Spaniard arrived at this year’s SMBC Singapore Open having won the US Masters in 2017 and lived up to his star billing by playing exquisite golf to win by five strokes.
His final round 68 spreadeagled a quality field.
Garcia was pleased to carry his Ryder Cup form into the Valderrama Masters.
“It’s amazing to be able to win here at Valderrama three times – it’s a dream come true,” he said.
“It’s so difficult. This golf course is so challenging and for me to be able to go out there in the conditions we played in all week and shoot three rounds under par means a lot. I’m very proud of that and really excited about the week.”
