Dru Love IV, who competed in this year’s SMBC Singapore Open alongside his famous dad Davis Love III, played the round of his life on the Mackenzie Tour in Canada on Thursday.
An opening 12-under-par 60 in the HFX Pro-Am saw the 25-year-old American beat the course record at Oakfield Golf and Country Club by two strokes.
Love carded two eagles and eight birdies for his best competitive round of the season since his closing 65 at Sentosa Golf Club in January saw him finish tied 12th in the SMBC Singapore Open – a stroke behind his father who ended equal ninth.
Using a new putter, Love “got hot” quickly with a birdie at the opening hole.
“I’ve been telling my teacher and my dad that if I get the putter going, everything is going to take care of itself,” he said.
“I’m beyond ecstatic with how it’s going with the putter, I’ve been struggling all year, so it was fun to see it get in the hole today.”
Love is two shots clear of countryman Jared Wolfe.
