Love III in fine form on way to Sentosa

American legend Davis Love III will arrive at this week’s SMBC Singapore Open at Sentosa Golf Club on the back of a fine seventh place finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

The World Golf Hall of Famer shot four rounds in the 60s for a 16-under total, six shots adrift of winner Matt Kuchar but just a stroke behind four players who were tied for third.

Love, 54, was winning tournament before many players in the Sony Open field were born but more than held his own at Waialae CC.

He shot 64-65 over the weekend with a birdie-birdie-par-birdie finish to his third round proving particularly satisfying.

Love plans to play a full schedule on the regular PGA Tour this year bar a special mission to the SMBC Singapore Open where he hopes to book a trip to The Open at Portrush, Northern Ireland, in July.

The top four non-exempt players from the leading 12 on the leaderboard come Sunday will win a spot in The Open and Love has his eyes on one of the places.

“I just want to play in it. I just love playing in it, I don’t care where it is,” Love, who last played The Open in 2012, told the Golf Channel.

“It’s just like the U.S. Open or the Masters, I would just like to play them one more time. Especially The Open.”
