Song explains selfie with superstar Spieth

SMBC Singapore Open defending champion Song Younghan has revealed that his selfie with the player he pipped to the title last year – then world number one Jordan Spieth – received a mixed reaction from fellow competitors and fans.

The Korean edged Spieth in a Monday finish and after the trophy presentation took a selfie with the American superstar.

Although he did not post the picture on social media, a photograph of him snapping it was widely shared online.

“There were many responses to those photos,” said Song. “Somebody asked me why (I was) taking a picture with the other contestant, even though he’s a superstar, and some people told me I was humorous and cute. Mostly people were curious about Jordan’s character.

“Of course, as you know, he’s a very kind, good guy. I enjoy new situations so I took a commemorative picture with him because we play in different tours and who knew when we would meet again.

“I didn’t upload it because it was just for me. However I met him at two or three other tournaments after (the SMBC Singapore Open). I did not expect to meet him so soon afterwards.”

With three-time winner Adam Scott, Major champion Ernie Els and popular Spaniard Sergio Garcia highlighting the field for the 2017 SMBC Singapore Open at Sentosa Golf Club from January 19-22, Song could be in selfie mode with the stars once again if he successfully defends his title.
