Trio grab qualifying spots

Japan’s Shunya Takeyasu, Malcolm Kokocinski of Sweden and Singapore’s Marc Ong qualified for the SMBC Singapore Open after shooting sub-par scores over the New Tanjong Course at Sentosa Golf Club.

Takeyasu, who tied for 23rd at the SMBC Singapore Open in 2018 and made the cut last year, carded a four-under 66 to lead the 56 hopefuls who were vying for three spots.

A winner on the Asian Development Tour at the PGM UMW Championship in 2016, Takeyasu mixed six birdies and two bogeys as he sealed his place in the tournament.

Kokocinski, an Asian Tour winner at the 2018 Bangladesh Open, and Ong tied for second spot with rounds of 67.

The Swede, who finished tied for 38th at last year’s SMBC Singapore Open was bogey free while 24 year old Ong, a team gold medallist at the SEA Games in 2017, eagled the par-four 18th (his ninth hole of the day after starting at the 10th) to go along with three birdies and two bogeys.

Ong missed the cut at the 2018 SMBC Singapore Open.
